ONE of Droitwich Spa's most popular attractions is getting an exciting new look.

The lido, an open air, saltwater swimming pool in the centre of the town, will be given an £8 million refurbishment as part of plans to make Droitwich a national destination.

Matt Nicol, chair of Droitwich Spa Place Board, said: "We're committed to supporting Wychavon's vision for enhancing our town for both residents and visitors.

"The lido project has been a central focus for over a year and we're thrilled to invite residents to join us as we take this exciting step.

"The project is a result of significant effort and collaboration from many groups to create something we can all truly take pride in."

As part of the new wave of improvement, the lido's cafe will be joined with the Art Deco building at the northern end of the pool with new wing extensions.

Other upgrades to the lido will include a safer entrance from Worcester Road, a dedicated footpath from the street to the entrance, a redesigned appearance to the pool and surround area and a new family-friendly swimming area which would take over the space of the existing water play area.

A spokesperson for Wychavon District Council said: "We're aiming to create an enhanced experience that will make the lido more sustainable and help put Droitwich Spa on the map as a leisure, health and wellbeing destination."

Funding for the improvements to the Lido come after the council scrapped plans to build a new leisure centre in the town in February.

The centre, which was going to replace the existing 40-year-old site on Briar Mill, was cancelled after expected costs rose from £25 million to £42 million.

£7 million was also earmarked for renovations to the current leisure centre, with proposals yet to be finalised.

The lido has got approval from several district councillors, including executive board member for economy and tourism Cllr Richard Morris.

He said: "Residents made it clear during the consultation for the town prospectus they wanted to see the lido invested in to create a sustainable future for an asset they are proud of.

"I'm delighted this proposal delivers on that ask."

Residents can give their views on the development until Sunday, December 15.
