A LAUGHING gang filmed themselves throwing a cat off a bridge and then shared the footage on Snapchat.
The video caused uproar with claims it is not the first time cats have been thrown from the footbridge in St John's.
Richard Udall, Worcester City councillor for St John's, informed the police of the video and has demanded action against those involved.
He said: "A number of people shared their suspicions that there were some people throwing cats over a bridge.
"On Sunday morning, someone called me and said they had a video of some people throwing a cat into the Laugherne Brook.
"The video was very graphic and horrible to watch and there's no indication as to whether the cat survived."
The Snapchat video, seen by Worcester News, shows a cat in distress carried by one of the group.
The teen then throws it over the barrier of the bridge on Meco Alley, near Greenacres Road, while others can be heard laughing in the background.
West Mercia Police have asked for the video not to be shared further so it does not affect any potential criminal proceedings.
The incident has caused widespread anger among the community.
"I hope these individuals are found and brought to justice as it makes me sick to the core," Cllr Udall said.
"They are not representative of St John's and the majority are quite rightly angry and upset about this.
"It is damaging to the reputation of St John's and it is damaging to the people who have witnessed this."
RSPCA said it received 227 reports of cats being abandoned, poisoned, mutilated, shot, beaten or neglected in Worcestershire and Herefordshire in 2021 alone.
Malvern was hit by a series of feline poisonings earlier this year, however, the police were forced to close the investigation due to a lack of evidence.
Cllr Udall explained that this was not the first incident of animal abuse in Meco Alley that had been reported to him.
He added: "I urge anyone who knows anything about this to report it to the police and if you want to remain anonymous, please contact Crimestoppers."
