TWO men on a motorbike broke in to a city supermarket in the early hours of the morning forcing it to close temporarily.

The duo forced their way into Co-op in Canada Way, Lower Wick, Worcester, in the early hours of this morning (Friday).

Customers have been left disappointed as the supermarket was forced to remain closed throughout the day though signs said it would reopen soon.

The break-in happened between 2am and 2.40am with officers remaining at the supermarket until 9.30am.

The criminals left empty-handed on a suspected motorbike after attempting to break into the tills.

A Co-op spokesperson said: "There was an incident in the early hours of this morning (November 8) at our Canada Way store in Lower Wick where intruders broke into the store.

"The store is temporarily closed to repair the damages and we apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused.

"We urge anyone who may have any information to come forward to Police, who are investigating."

Police were caught arriving at the scene at around 3.10am and were still at the scene at 9.30am.

The owner of the vape shop next door said: "On CCTV I saw a police squad car arriving at the back of the Co-op at 3.10am.

"I also took the dog for a walk this morning and saw a squad car out at the front.

"I asked police what was going on and they said they couldn't confirm anything.

"Then I said I was concerned for my store and they told me that it might have been a burglary."

Police have confirmed that enquiries are ongoing.

No windows appeared to be damaged at the Co-op this afternoon, however, a repairman was at the store and it appears that the pair jimmied open the front doors.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: "Police were called to reports of a break in at the Co-op on Canada Way this morning.

"The break in occurred between 2am and 2.40am.

"Nothing was stolen but an attempt was made to break into the tills.

"Two men are believed to have left the scene on a motorbike.

"Enquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact DI Sharon Wallace-Rathmell on 01905 716937."

Nearby residents were aware that something had happened at the store but did not see the break-in.
