A MAN has been banned from entering a city centre shop after being accused of stealing more than £100 in stock.

The incident happened yesterday (November 6) afternoon on the High Street when the man allegedly took two gift sets worth £114.98 and ran out of the shop.

A security guard working at one of the shops in the area was able to pursue the man and stopped him on Church Street.

The man was taken back to the store and the police were called.

A security guard working at the store said: "The problem is only getting worse.

"The theft value was £114.98 and I called the police because I wanted it to go on their figures.

"He entered the store, went up to the display and grabbed two gift sets.

"He then ran out and I caught up to him on Church Street heading towards the Shambles.

"I detained him, told him the store policy, he complied and I took him back to the holding room.

"Once back in the holding room, he gave me his details because he knew I could have let him go without police attending.

"Whilst I was waiting for police he gave me a probation letter and I said 'if you're on probation and shoplifting police need to know about this'.

"I told police I got the stock back and got his details so the store won't go any further but to ban him from coming back."

Upon arriving at the store police carried out a search of the man but found no other stolen items.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called by security staff at the store, through the radio system used within the city centre, to a report of shoplifting.

"Upon officers’ arrival, the suspect had already been stopped by security and stolen items had been recovered.

"No other items were found to have been stolen and the shop did not wish to pursue any further police action.

"The person caught stealing was given a ban from the shop."
