THE 'tough' decision to close a sandwich shop was given the final push by the minimum wage rise announcement in the Autumn Budget.

Joe Murcott, who runs Sangers Gourmet Sandwiches and Deli, said a number of factors including quieter footfall and higher costs were to blame but ultimately the changes announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in the budget were the final push.

Ms Reeves announced the minimum wage will rise to £12.21 an hour next year after the Chancellor confirmed a 6.7 per cent increase.

The Chancellor also announced that the minimum wage for people aged 18 to 20 would rise to £10 an hour, an increase of £1.40.

Sangers, in Infirmary Walk, Netherton Court, Worcester will have its last day of trading on Sunday, December 1.

The City's Labour MP Tom Collins was contacted for a comment but did not respond ahead of our deadline.

Mr Murcott has run the sandwich shop since 2022.

He said: "It has been a combination of quite common things that are happening up and down the country.

"The High Street is quieter and the same with footfall, which we have particularly noticed in our area in recent months.

"Costs have been steadily rising since we first opened, the lease has gone through the roof but budget changes to minimum wages was the final push.

"It was quite drastic and has pushed us in a certain direction and we can't pass on the extra costs.

"There's only a certain limit you can pass onto the customers."

Sangers was first opened three years ago and was the brainchild of former Worcester Warriors players Niall Annett and Ethan Waller.

Mr Murcott continued: "It's my baby so it's been a tough one.

"Every business has its highs and lows but the great thing here is that so many people have had positive memories, so we must have done something right.

"I don't think we are alone, I think a lot of small businesses in Worcester have really struggled over the last 12, 18 and 24 months.

"When we told all the staff they all said they would stick around till the end because they all love Sangers as much as I do.

"It's upsetting to see it go but I would like to express my thanks to everyone who has visited, it's been a fun ride but it's an unfortunate end.

"Who knows what will happen next with the unit."

Customers have been sharing their sadness after the cafe's impending closure was announced.

Jack S Chamberlain said: "Gutted. The best pizza around, no exaggeration. Put the prices up - I'll still pay!"

Dave Smith added: "Always really liked the place, the pizza is the best I’ve had. Sad to see a great little independent shop go."
