A RESIDENT concerned with unsafe children's play equipment that looked "scruffy and uncared for" decided to take matters into her own hands.

Mandy Neill, a Claines resident and community campaigner, had helped improve the damaged playground surface on Sabrina Avenue after becoming concerned with safety.

She feared a child could trip over and fall on the uneven playground surface and noticed part of the play equipment was missing.

She said: "I was concerned that without attention, children could hurt themselves if they fell over.

"One of the pieces of play equipment, a roundabout, had also been missing for a long time due to the damage, and the area looked scruffy and uncared-for."

Enquiries led to her arranging a meeting with Worcester City Council officers to show them the extent of the problem and to see if it could be resolved.

Ms Neill added: "After a useful visit to the playground, I was pleased to be told that while a permanent fix would need to wait until the contractors returned, the surface could be temporarily repaired, and this work was carried out very soon afterwards, with the roundabout being reinstalled too.

"I’m really glad this part of the playground can be used safely again.

"Many thanks to Worcester City Council for meeting me and getting the surface sorted out quickly afterwards.”

According to Ms Neill, the playground was in a state of disrepair for nine months.

It is expected that the permanent repair will be carried out in the spring.
