EMERGENCY repairs on a main city road caused gridlock for motorists.

Commuters were stuck in traffic queues for upwards of 30 minutes after temporary multi-way traffic signals were put in place on London Road, Worcester.

National Grid was behind the signals as they opened up roadworks on London Road to begin an emergency repair on a low voltage cable that has been causing power supply issues.

A spokesperson for National Grid Electricity Distribution said: "We'd like to thank motorists for their patience as we undertake emergency repairs on London Road.

"Temporary traffic lights are currently in operation while we identify and fix the fault.

"We know there's never an ideal time for works like this but they are essential in maintaining the reliability of electricity supply for homes and businesses in the local area."

The temporary signals replaced the traffic lights outside Tesco petrol station, near London Road's cross-section with Sebright Avenue and Wyld's Lane, causing heavy delays on Monday morning (November 4).

Queues continued to build throughout the morning causing delays along Whittington Road and Spetchley Road as drivers joined the roundabout.

One commuter, who was queuing on Spetchley Road to join London Road, said they had been "stuck in Spetchley Road for about 30 minutes".

Another commuter called the situation "absolute carnage" as drivers tried to make their way into the city centre.

National Grid's roadworks are scheduled to end on Friday (November 8).
