A GROUP of volunteers have completely transformed a century-old war memorial club in a DIY SOS-type makeover.

Members of the Fernhill Heath War Memorial Club have renovated the inside of their beloved meeting place on their own in just two weeks.

The club re-opened on Tuesday and held its official celebration ceremony on Saturday (November 2).

It has struggled to attract people to come to the club recently, averaging around 15 people on Friday and Saturday nights, when it should be at its busiest.

The members' club has revamped its committee and decided it would refurbish the inside of the building to make it feel more modern and attract more members.

The new chair Mike Skilbeck told the Worcester News: "The renovation was like Nick Knowles on steroids, it had a real DIY SOS feel to it.

"We had members who were local tradespeople who helped out with elements such as the plumbing, while I looked up how to do some jobs on YouTube.

"We all really pulled together and managed to save tens of thousands of pounds on the renovation while making a really good job of it."

The club was founded in 1922 as a memorial to the men of Fernhill Heath who gave their lives in the First World War and as a meeting place for the armed forces and people living in the area.

It now has members of all ages and looks to bring a family atmosphere.

It also has live entertainment and the chance to watch live sports on the television and has pool, poker and darts teams to take part in.

Mr Skilbeck added: "The reception to the renovation has been fantastic, it's really given the place a new lease of life.

"The other day a few committee members were sat in a full club with everyone having fun and we were all grinning, because what we'd planned had worked, this is how the club should be.

"I think it's put us on the right step for the future of the club, we've done everything we can to make this work and hopefully, it will."

One of the club's first events since re-opening will take place at 8pm on Friday, November 8, when they pay tribute to those who have fallen at a Remembrance service.
