RENOVATIONS at a former city steakhouse should begin early next year.

The former Worcester Steak 'n' Grill House building in the Cornmarket, Worcester has remained dormant since Davenports - a Midlands brewery - purchased it in 2022.

However, a team from Davenports is set to visit the site ahead of starting refurbishment in 2025.

Katie McPhilimey, Davenports' associate marketing director, said: "Our in-house maintenance team have just completed the huge refurbishment of The Kings Arms in Kings Heath (Birmingham), and so next week some of the team will head over to the Worcester site to scope out work for an early start next year.

"Our industry is very much a moving feast and as yet we haven’t finalised the offering for the Worcester site, however, the many facets of our business allow for a number of exciting options.

"The Boutique Collection enables us to create venues with a bespoke offering to an area, the multi-award-winning Pub & Kitchens portfolio serves up elevated Great British pubs with handcrafted food and cocktails as well as free live music at the weekends whilst our My Local sector is all about great value – so free sport on screens, free live music, foodie offers and happy hours.

"Next week's visit will help us to decide on what the exact offering will be.

"We have always admired Worcester – from the picture-perfect Friar Street right through, it has a thoughtful offering.

"So whatever we do, we will ensure it serves up something just right for the Worcestershire audience."

Davenports had previously said its plans for the Cornmarket site had been "slightly delayed".

Speaking in August, Katie McPhilimey said: "Our renovation has been delayed slightly due to the acquisition of an operating site which requires considerable work to bring it online with our portfolio and values.

"However, as soon as that large project and another smaller venue have been completed, work on Worcester will commence."

Following Davenports' purchase of the property in 2022, the brewery's finance director Ian Robinson said: "A major overhaul of the venue is required to bring it in line with Davenports branding and styling, and to ensure it pleases the valued cliental we hope to attract."
