A TOUCHING and eyecatching handcrafted display honouring the soldiers who died in service has been revealed at a city park.
Knit, Knot and Natter, a group of knitting and crocheting lovers from around Worcester, have put together a poppy display in memory of people from the city who died in conflicts.
The display, which is made up of over 1,000 handcrafted poppies, has been hung from the gates and railings of Gheluvelt Park.
Carol Westwood, a member of the group, said: "We've seen a lot of these knitted memorials and Gheluvelt is a memorial park so we thought it would be really nice."
The group put a call out in June asking for people to contribute knitted poppies and donate wool to help the cause and students from the Heart of Worcestershire College donated wax poppies.
"Ninety nine per cent of our wool has been donated by the people of Worcester and we've had money donated which helped us to buy the nets the poppies are tied to," she added.
Gheluvelt Park was created in the 1920s to honour the soldiers in the second Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment who stopped German forces from advancing in the Battle of Gheluvelt on October 31, 1914.
The defence from the British soldiers is often credited with stopping the Germans from pushing towards the channel which could have changed the outcome of the war.
Member Lisa Ball said: "It's just a way for us to mark our respects and with Gheluvelt having such a rich link with remembrance, it felt right."
The display includes poppies of several colours, honouring different groups of people who have been involved in conflicts.
The knitters are hoping to increase the size of their display next year and are hoping for even more help from people from around the city and further afield.
