5. Crispy Cod

The Crispy Cod in Pinkett Street comes 5th in the list with a 4-star rating out of 5 based on 40 reviews. 

Of the 40, 30 rated it excellent with one reviewer commenting: "We've tried a few places locally for fish and chips and nowhere comes close.

"Everything about this place is great - the people are so friendly, it's beautifully clean and the fish and chips is fresh and delicious - as good as in any restaurant."

4. Lyppards Fryer

Moving into fourth on the list is Lyppards Fryer with four stars out of 72 reviews.

A reviewer of the Ankerage Green chip shop said: "Absolutely excellent fish and chip meal, really pleasant service.

"Really tasty meals. Really nicely presented."

 

3. Rainbow Hill Chippy

In third place once again is Rainbow Hill Chippy.

The chip shop has a solid rating of 4 1/2 stars from 46 reviews - 39 of them rating the Astwood Road-based chip shop as excellent.

A reviewer earlier this month said: "An order for 17, take away, pre-ordered. All ready bang on time, excellently presented, beautiful fish with crunchy batter, chips lovely.

"Pies and sausages met with everybody's approval." 

 

2. Donnellys Fish & Chip Shop

Narrowly the runner-up again is Donnellys in Bromwich Road.

It has a 4 1/2 rating, the same as the top spot, but only missing out due to the number of reviews at 92. 

TripAdviser were full of praise for the chippy, one writing: "These are best fish and chips I have ever tasted.

"You can always rely on the quality of the freshly cooked fish."

Remaining at the top of the list is Ambleside Fish Bar.

With a solid 4 1/2 stars from 354 reviews, the Ambleside Drive-based chippy remains the undisputed king.

A reviewer wrote earlier this month: "Omg the best.

"Do they even know what the meaning of small is - make sure you have an appetite but you won’t be disappointed."
