A TEAROOM with a twist has opened its doors in one of the most historic streets in Worcester.

Tipsy Teacup, in 45 Friar Street, was opened by Sam Ellis and her two children Macoy and Moya Ellis after they decided to leave their jobs and start their own business.

Mr Ellis said: "All three of us were working in an office environment before this.

"It's not a great industry to be in and it put us off working for people."

Mrs Ellis added: "We're a very sociable family and this café was so well loved.

"It needs energy and vibrancy and I thought we were the right fit."

The cafe is now operating smoothly after opening on Tuesday, October 1, but Mrs Ellis explained how quickly the tearoom went from a vacant building to a welcoming venue.

"We decided to take over this place four weeks before we open so we turned it around sharply," she said.

 "It felt a bit like Fawlty Towers for the first few days."

Tipsy Teacup offers homemade food and coffee locally sources from Herefordshire.

Mrs Ellis said: "A coffee connoisseur came in and said it was the second best coffee she'd ever had." 

The team also plan on introducing afternoon teas, something that proved to be popular at G&Tea, the most recent business to operate in 45 Friar Street.

However, the tearoom is not without its surprises.

The business has an alcohol licence which Mrs Ellis says they will be making the most of: "We've got something called the tipsy takeover which is our equivalent of a bottomless brunch. 

"We want to host Tispy hen parties and we've already had enquiries about baby showers."

Mrs Ellis also teased something new coming to the tearoom in the coming months: "We're also going to be delivering an experience that no one else has done before.

"The events side are going to be a big part of it as it won't sustain itself just as a tearoom."

G&Tea was forced to close due to spirally costs in May despite its popularity with residents.

Mrs Ellis said it was something that every business is concerned about: "We have to diversify and we've known that since we took over.

"For us, it's about working smart not hard."
