The future of a military museum display has been safeguarded for the next 25 years.

The Mercian Regiment Museum (Worcestershire) and Museums Worcestershire signed an agreement to ensure the Worcestershire Soldier display remains in the city until 2051.

The announcement comes ahead of the 110th anniversary of the Battle of Gheluvelt on Thursday (October 31).

The Worcestershire Soldier, currently housed in Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum, tells the story of the county's soldiers from 1694 to the present day.

It combines the collections of the Mercian Regiment Museum (Worcestershire) and the Worcestershire Yeomanry Museum.

The display is set for redevelopment at The Commandery thanks to a £243,200 grant from National Lottery players and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and £50,000 from the UK Government’s Towns Fund.

Mark Jackson and Mike Green from the Mercian Regiment Museum (Worcestershire) and Philippa Tinsley, director of Museums Worcestershire, signed the new 25-year agreement at the Guildhall on Friday (October 25).

Mr Jackson, chair of the board of trustees, said: "We are absolutely delighted that we now have a 25-year guarantee from Worcester City Council that together we will be able to cast fresh light on the lives, achievements, tragedies, and triumphs of the generations who preceded us and to whom we owe so much.

"We are a step closer to preserving the museum for another generation.

"We cannot forget the gratitude that Worcester owes to the National Lottery players who have enabled this."

Currently, The Commandery tells the story of the city's role in the English Civil War.

The redevelopment will join up more than 300 years of military and social history in a new attraction aimed at attracting more general and school visitors.

The project partners aim to create an improved visitor experience through improved storytelling and by providing greater opportunities for volunteering, learning and engagement.

Mr Jackson added: "At the same time we must also pursue vigorously our own Capital Appeal which combined with the Heritage Fund is funding the project."
