A NEW digital speed sign has been installed at St Peter's after the former sign had been stolen.

The Vehicle Activated Sign was switched on on Thursday (October 17) on St Peter's Drive, near to its junction with Raven Drive, in Worcester.

The new sign comes after the original one was stolen in April.

St Peter's Parish Council chairman, John Renshaw, said: "Residents had expressed concern for a period of time about speeding vehicles and noise produced along St Peter's Drive.

"So we worked with Worcestershire Highways to get a replacement organised after they had helped us install the original one in December last year.

"One of my near neighbours has already told me he's delighted to have the sign back."

Live wires were left sticking out of a pole after the previous digital sign was torn from it in April.

Cllr Renshaw said: "The police looked into it for us of course but they really had nothing to go on.

"It seemed to be very much a one-off situation which makes it difficult to investigate and take any further."

The Vehicle Activated Sign was initially installed on Friday, October 11 on St Peter's Drive, and a further sign has also been installed on nearby Bath Road near Acorns Children's Hospice.

Cllr Renshaw said: "We're all guilty of getting into routines when we're driving, and most drivers probably aren't conscious that they are going over the speed limit.

"The sign reminds people of it."

The new sign on Bath Road follows a reduction in speed limit to 30mph on the road near Ketch roundabout in June.

Cllr Renshaw added: "I think it's the reminder that drivers needed that the speed limit there has changed."

Worcester city councillor Elena Round, who represents St Peter's, said: "Anything that actively engages with motorists regarding speed is welcome.

"Speed is a regular concern in St Peter's.

"There are concerns about children who are crossing roads such as St Peter's Drive, with their parents, and we have a number of visually impaired residents too.

"So anything that helps reduce speed should be welcomed."
