WORK on a new city centre bar can continue after councillors granted an application for a premises licence.
The new bar at 42 Foregate Street is scheduled to open at the end of November.
At a meeting of Worcester City Council’s licensing sub-committee on Friday, it was granted a licence to sell alcohol and play recorded music throughout the venue.
There is also permission for live music on Friday and Saturday evenings, although owner Nick Carroll assured councillors there would be “no amplified music” and that noise would be well contained.
“I’m 59 years old and there are some bars in Worcester I wouldn’t be seen dead in,” he told the committee.
“This will be a place to relax, with good quality products in a proper, restored Georgian building.
“Foregate Street used to be a great promenade from the 18th century and we think we can bring this area back to life, but it won’t be a late-night venue.
“I’m aware that if there is a nuisance you can shut it down tomorrow.”
Licensing officer Graham Rowberry told councillors there had been one objection from a member of the public and no objections from police.
Mr Carroll said: “The crime map shows incidents are happening by the bridge or by Castle Street.

“We will have responsible door staff, colour CCTV and even things like no shelves in the toilets - we’re designing out crime opportunities.”
Conditions of the licence include doors and windows being closed after 11pm.
Mr Carroll said this wouldn’t be an issue even in the summer months as the bar will have air conditioning.
It will also have a beer garden with space for about 25 people.
There are plans for the venue to be made available for private parties and events on weekdays.
Mr Carroll said he has already received interest from a wine-tasting club that currently meets in St John’s.
