THE bell of Worcester's tallest spire is to chime later in the morning so residents can have more of a lie in as a city council rang in the changes.

The bell of St Andrew's Spire in Deansway in Worcester, also Glover's Needle, now chimes at 7am instead of 6am after residents complained their sleep was being disturbed.

Cllr Adam Scott, elected in May to serve Cathedral ward, said the bells had now been programmed to start a bit later in the morning after residents of the Old Fire Station opposite complained that their early morning sleep was being disturbed.

The bell is managed by Worcester City Council and also chimes at full council meetings.

He said: "I really love that Worcester still has some chiming clocks, not just Worcester Cathedral but St Martin in The Cornmarket. Alongside York Minster, the bells of Worcester Cathedral have the best tonal quality of in the country.

"We have more people living in the city centre which is a great thing. It is wonderful to have all these eyes and ears supporting us in Worcester and keeping the city a nice place to live.

"The Old Fire Station is a lovely development with great views of the Cathedral."

St Andrew's was built in the 15th century, but this was destroyed in a great storm of 1733.

According to British listed Buildings the spire was rebuilt in 1751 by Nathaniel Wilkinson, a journey-man of Worcester.

The majority of the building in Copenhagen Street, home to the city’s fire chiefs until 2015, has been converted into luxury apartments.

But the ground floor has remained empty, despite grand plans for a food hall and wine bar that never came to fruition.

Plans are now coming together to fill the bottom floor of the building.
