A FORMER mayor of Worcester who welcomed the Queen to the city has died following an illness.

Brenda Sheridan served as a Labour city councillor for the St Clement ward from 1986 until 2002.

Born in Yorkshire in 1932, she also had a long and successful career in education.

The highlight of her 16 years on Worcester City Council came in 1989 when, as mayor, she welcomed Queen Elizabeth II to the Guildhall as part of a royal visit to mark the 800th anniversary of the granting of the City Charter.

Ms Sheridan was actively involved in many community organisations, including Worcester Municipal Charities, Worcester Arts Council, Worcester Arts Workshop and St. Richard’s Hospice.

She was a former director of Home-Start South Worcestershire and was chair of governors at Oldbury Park School.

Brenda continued to represent the council on several outside bodies long after her retirement as a city councillor.

Lynn Denham, leader of Worcester City Council said: “Brenda's long life was dedicated to public service and helping others.

“She will have touched the lives of many Worcester people as a teacher, a councillor, a magistrate and a musician.”
