ENFORCEMENT action is being taken to clean up “dirty, smelly” bins causing a “risk to health” in St John’s.

The bins in Henwick Road, outside the old Co-op store, have been a source of complaint for residents for a while.

County and city councillor Richard Udall said many people have approached him about the bins, which are often overflowing, but he hasn’t been able to say much because of a complex legal process.

“The bins on Henwick Road are a disgrace, they are dirty, smelly and a hazard to pedestrians,” said Cllr Udall, who said the contents “frequently overspill onto the pavement” but aren’t cleaned up.

“It attracts vermin and could be a risk to health,” he said.

“I have been working closely with a number of agencies to get them removed.

“Unfortunately, it’s a long legal process, but I hope we are now close to a resolution.”

Cllr Udall said a notice has been served and that he is willing to seek “full legal enforcement to ensure compliance”.

He added: “The bins simply have to go. No more warnings, time is up.”

Worcester City Council confirmed that enforcement action is being taken over the bins in Henwick Road.

After Cllr Udall posted a picture of the bins on Facebook, one resident said: “I’ve been taking pictures of all the overflowing rubbish. Why have they appeared? We never used to have this problem.

“The whole area around the start of Henwick Road looks so neglected and run down. The Co-op car park just adds to the problem.”

Another commenter said: “If the shops around St John’s had [an] easy access to put them, [it] would help.”

One person said: “It smells so bad” and another added: “I would think the rats are having a field day.”
