A MAN has shared the "terrifying" moment the truck he bought weeks ago burst into flames on the M5 in Worcester.
Daniel Adkins was driving himself, his brother and his stepdad to work in Hereford when his newly purchased Ford Ranger started smoking while they were southbound on the M5 in lane three.
The electrical contractor quickly moved his car to the hard shoulder and, seconds after jumping out of the vehicle, watched as it burst into flames.
"It just went up in no time and it started banging," he said.
"You do not ever think it would happen to you - it was really surreal.
"After the state of shock, it is hard to take in.
"Then it kicked in at 4am the other morning and I noticed how different it could have been."
Two lanes at junction six near Worcester were closed for hours while fire crews spent an hour tackling the blaze.
The Ford Ranger was bought from Spa Motors Hereford on Tuesday, September 10 and Mr Adkins said it only had 29,000 miles on the clock.
The car was only two years old.
He said the car was under a three-month warranty but Spa Motors Hereford told him to go through his insurance instead.
"It was not my doing, and cars don't just set on fire, so it must have been a mechanical issue," he added.
Donna Dinnock, Mr Adkins's mother, added she thought it was terrifying that her two sons and husband were in the vehicle when it started smoking.
She said: "What if the door got stuck and they could not get out?
"A minute after getting out, the car went up in flames.
"It is terrifying."
A spokesperson for Spa Motors Hereford said: "We are currently corresponding with the customer in regards to the matter.
"We have no further comment to make."
