A HEARTBROKEN man has called for answers after police have kept his beloved assistance dog for nearly six months.

Ian Walker, from Abberley, has claimed Thor, a Dogue de Bordeaux, was taken from him by West Mercia Police after an alleged attack in Rubery Farm Foods' car park.

Mr Walker claimed a cocker spaniel first attacked Thor but, according to police, the spaniel's female owner needed hospital treatment which led to officers seizing the dog.

Police have confirmed Thor has remained in their care after initially being taken on Wednesday, May 1.

Mr Walker said police have ordered him to get Thor assessed for behaviour, which has cost around £3,500.

He added Thor would be assessed on Monday (October 14).

Mr Walker, who suffered a brain injury after coming off his motorbike in 2017, said he has been without Thor for so long he has had to find a new assistance dog.

He also said it wasn't Thor who inflicted the injuries on the woman and it was her own dog who bit her.

He told the Worcester News: "I have had to get another Douge De Bordeaux as my assistance dog and she has been great, but I just want Thor back.

"My mental health has been awful through this, I miss Thor.

"I have not been given any timeline on when I will get Thor back.

"It has been nearly six months now, I just don't know what to do."

Mr Walker said on the day of the alleged attack he stopped in the Farm Foods car park and undid Thor’s seatbelt to put the dog's jacket on.

He further claims he was distracted while talking to a woman who had a cocker spaniel and seconds later Thor jumped out the back of his car and went around to them.

He claimed the spaniel had a go at Thor, who got the smaller dog around the harness, holding on to it.

Mr Walker said after he had got hold of Thor, he let go, and after telling him off he picked Thor up and put him in the back of the car.

He added he lost sight of the woman and the spaniel and then left.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said officers were called to Farm Foods at around 6.10pm on April 27 following a report a woman had been bitten by a dog outside of the store.

The woman was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with injuries.

The dog was seized by officers on Wednesday, May 1 and enquiries are still ongoing.

The dog remains in the care of the police.

The spokesperson added it would not be appropriate to comment further on the case at this stage.
