FLAGS could be installed to spruce up the entrances to a city shopping centre.

The owners of Crowngate Shopping Centre want to put flags above the Broad Street and High Street entrances to Chapel Walk.

The flags, which would be black with ‘Chapel Walk’ written in gold, would replace metal Crowngate signs described as being “dated and very much of their time”.

“The proposal offers an opportunity to enhance the existing entrance façade by replacing the outdated signage, which will have a positive impact on the listed buildings they relate to as well as the surrounding Conservation Area,” planning documents state.

The Broad Street entrance to Chapel Walk is via the former Unicorn Hotel, a Georgian coaching inn and Grade II listed building now home to shops and offices.

The other entrance is via another Grade II listed building, 85 High Street.

“Both entrances currently feature a vertical metallic signage fixture that protrudes from the second floor of the building to advertise the Crowngate Shopping Centre,” say Crowngate’s owners, Starburst (UK) Ltd.

“The signage has a narrow, vertical frame, with the main body extending vertically along the wall with a decorative abstract metal design.

“The signs are illuminated by two cylindrical lights at their base. The existing signage is now outdated and is in a state of deterioration that currently detracts from the historic façade of the building.”

Plans to convert flats at the Friary Walk part of Crowngate into a HMO have also been submitted to Worcester City Council.
