ENEXPECTED structural issues at Malvern Splash Leisure Complex has forced bosses to keep the swimming pool shut for longer than first thought.

The sudden move, which will also see the closure of Priory Road delayed by over a week, comes after fears were raised re-opening sooner would risk someone getting injured.

The splash on Priory Road was originally closed on Monday, September 23 for three weeks for essential roof repairs as well as to allow the splash to have solar panels installed.

However, it has since been revealed there are issues with the internal roof structure, meaning additional work is now needed before contractors can safely proceed with the rest of the project.

As a result, the splash will now remain shut until Tuesday, October 29.

Priory Road will also be closed on Wednesday, October 16 while work is carried out.

The issues were first discovered after scaffolding was erected around the roof to allow a full structural investigation to be completed.

A spokesperson for the splash said the issues could not have been foreseen until contractors began dismantling the existing external roof structure.

The spokesperson added after the structure issue was uncovered, the contractors’ health and safety advisor requested the pool hall be empty during this time to ensure there would be no risk of injury to swimmers, spectators or staff.

The spokesperson added: "We understand that this may cause some disappointment and inconvenience and we want to update you on the work that has taken place and the reason for this extension.

"We are pleased to confirm that our contractors will be assigning an additional team of workers to the project.

"This will minimise the closure period, and they are confident that they will be able to complete the necessary works within the additional two-week period, as long as we do not have a period of prolonged inclement weather."

"The roof works will extend the life span of the Malvern Splash facility by a guaranteed 25 years.

"We appreciate people's patience and understanding during this time.

"The safety of our customers and colleagues remains our top priority."
