A community bike group in Worcester has made over 1,000 reports of dangerous driving to the police.

Bike Worcester has been reporting illegal and dangerous driving to West Mercia Police over the last three years.

The group recently updated its interactive map, displaying the date and location of each report made on the Operation Snap portal, which has now surpassed 1,000 submissions.

Police encourage the public to submit video footage of potential traffic offences.

Depending on the evidence, the police may take no further action, issue a warning letter, or a Notice of Intended Prosecution.

The latter may result in an education course, acceptance of points and a fine, or the case being brought before magistrates.

The majority of submissions to Operation Snap are from drivers using dash-cams, but footage from cyclists, equestrians, and pedestrians is also accepted.

The group's submissions mostly consist of videos of close passes, where drivers do not leave sufficient space when overtaking.

Dan Brothwell, chair of the group, said: "For years I’ve put up with close passes by drivers, and I have been so frustrated that there is nothing that can be done to stop it.

"We were told if we care about reducing road danger the only way to change the behaviour of drivers is to submit evidence."

Bike Worcester has received grants from the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner to fund cameras and Pass Pixi signs, which attach to clothes or pannier bags to remind drivers that cyclists may be recording.

Mr Brothwell said: "We’re incredibly grateful to Marc Bayliss for the grant.

"The Pass Pixis are brilliant, and we’ve collected data to demonstrate their effectiveness, roughly halving the amount of close passes during rush hour commutes."

He added: "The benefits of cycling to individuals and society are huge, and the City Council, County Council, and central government all have documented policies on increasing rates of cycling.

"For this to happen it is essential that cycling is both enabled and encouraged."

Bike Worcester is a dedicated group that was set up six years ago to promote safe and accessible cycling in the city.
