A photographic exhibition featuring the work of a late Magnum photographer is set to be displayed at Worcester Cathedral.

The exhibition, titled 'The English Cathedral', will showcase images of all 42 English Anglican cathedrals captured by the late photographer Peter Marlow.

The free exhibition, which is part of a tour organised by the Peter Marlow Foundation, will be on show from Tuesday (October 8) to Sunday, November 17.

Worcester is the 23rd cathedral to host the exhibition.

The Very Reverend Canon Dr Stephen Edwards, dean of Worcester, said: "It is an absolute honour for us to host Peter Marlow’s stunning exhibition here in Worcester.

"I often walk through the cathedral early in the morning and marvel at its beauty in the natural light.

"For Peter to have observed this and taken the time to travel around all of the English cathedrals and capture these serene and beautiful moments to share with us all is truly remarkable."

The images in the exhibition were captured over a three-year period and are said to highlight the varied architectural nuances between the buildings.

Marlow photographed the cathedrals using large format film and only natural light, with all artificial lighting turned off.

His photographs are said to bring into sharp relief the full interiors of the Cathedrals.

Martin Barnes, senior curator of photographs at the Victoria and Albert Museum, said: "When immersed in Peter’s photographs we are metaphorically in some kind of contemplative enclosure, if not a sanctuary: one that confronts us with our own sense of being.

"The forms captured here are simultaneously concrete and abstract: containers of history, light and, above all, space."

Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to take photographs of the exhibition in-situ at the Cathedral using instax cameras and film supplied by Fujifilm.

These instant photographs will create an interactive display that will be shared as part of the exhibition and on the social media channels and websites of the Cathedral and the Peter Marlow Foundation.

The foundation will choose a winner from those visitors who have contributed a photograph, with the winner awarded an estate stamped fine print of a cathedral photograph of their choice.
