A care home resident has celebrated the work of one of Britain's favourite children's authors by dressing up as a classic character.
The Belmont Care Home, part of the Sanders Senior Living, marked Roald Dahl Day on Friday, September 13, with a special event that saw children from North Worcester Primary Academy join residents for a day filled with storytelling and entertainment.
The highlight of the event was when Tony Markham, a resident at the care home, dressed up as Willy Wonka to share two stories he had written for his grandchildren.
The stories, titled Helen and Patch – The Swim Away Swan and Helen and Patch – The Wolf Among Sheep, were brought to life with illustrations by Mr Markham's granddaughter.
Carla Sidaway, customer relations manager at the care home, said: "This was a perfect opportunity to offer one of our residents time to showcase his wonderful stories.
"Tony has always been proud of these stories and would often share them with me.
"Being able to share them with the children made him so proud."
Stephanie Howard, home manager, added: "This was a big moment for Tony.
"He made these books for his children when they were little and loved reading to them.
"Despite the challenges Tony faces with his speech after an accident, he was brilliant, and The Belmont family couldn’t be prouder."
The day ended on a sweet note with biscuits and drinks.
Mr Markham said: "The day was very special, and I thought it was brilliant."
Scott Holdaway, outdoor learning lead and pastoral support at the school, said: "The children from North Worcester Primary Academy had an absolute blast at the Roald Dahl morning hosted by The Belmont.
"Tony’s captivating stories sparked laughter, excitement, and a love for reading."
