A formerly semi-derelict army clubhouse is looking ahead to a brighter future after receiving an £87,000 grant from Severn Trent for solar panels.

The former mess hall, once a hub for Worcestershire Regiment soldiers in Norton, near Worcester, had fallen into disrepair after the adjacent barracks was sold for housing in the 1980s.

Despite being home to the Worcester Norton Sports Club, the Grade II listed building was in a state of neglect.

However, the formation of Worcester Norton Community Interest Company (WNCIC) by dedicated volunteers marked the beginning of a transformation.

Their fundraising efforts, supported by Severn Trent, the National Lottery, and Wychavon District Council, have raised over £1 million.

The Severn Trent Community Fund’s grant, awarded last year, has been used for roof solar panels, new electric charging points for cars, and insulation work at the building.

Jade Gough, from the water company, said: "We were delighted to support the transformation of this historic Grade II building, which will offer so much to the local community.

"The solar panels help the environment by utilising renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions, plus they will save the community hub money on energy bills."

The newly named Sergeants Mess Community Hub now boasts newly decorated, spacious rooms for community use, refurbished changing areas, toilets and showers for the cricket team, a new bar and a sun-kissed terrace.

The grand unveiling was attended by members of the historic regiment, now merged with the Mercians, and other dignitaries.

Rob Goodman, one of WNCIC’s directors, said: "The building was close to derelict in places before we began this fundraising project, so we are very grateful for the support of Severn Trent, the National Lottery and Wychavon District Council.

"It’s unbelievable how many local people and groups are already engaging with and enjoying the new facility since we have opened, which is wonderful to see."
