WORCESTER students are being 'left stranded' and unable to make it to lessons due to train service chaos.

Last-minute train cancellations recently have left up to 150 students unable to travel from Worcester, Malvern and Ledbury to get to Hereford Sixth Form College.

Parents have hit out at West Midlands Railway, with one saying it's becoming untenable to rely on the service for work or college as it's 'just too unreliable.'

Others have contacted Mid Worcestershire MP Dame Harriett Baldwin saying they are considering withdrawing their children from Hereford Sixth Form College because of the train cancellations.

West Midlands Railway has apologised for the disruption and blamed it on train crew shortages and a recurring signalling fault between Hereford and Ledbury, which saw them implement a rail replacement service this week.

Hereford Sixth Form College Deputy Principal Phil Tranter claimed some students were stuck trying to get home from Hereford Station until 10pm earlier this week.

He told the Worcester News: "This is negatively impacting the student's education, with some turning up to college late, others missing lessons completely and some having to ask to attend lessons from home.

"We aren't in Covid again, students should be able to have face-to-face lessons with their teachers.

"Just this week, I spoke to a student who told me she has only been able to catch one train out of eight since Monday.

"We are having to open the college late to provide a safe space for students to go because they are having to wait at the station for so long."

A letter sent to all parents from Hereford Sixth Form College has urged them to get in touch with their MPs, West Midlands Railway or the rail ombudsman to take things further.

Mr Tranter added he had contacted West Midlands Railway on Wednesday looking for an explanation and to work towards a solution but still hasn't had a response.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Railway said it had offered to meet Hereford Sixth Form College staff and Dame Harriett regarding the train service.

The spokesperson added: “We are sorry to passengers on the Hereford Line whose journeys have been impacted by disruption recently.

"This has been as a result of train crew shortages and a recurring signalling fault between Hereford and Ledbury.

“We are fully committed to improving our service on this route and we are taking action to increase the number of drivers we have and better support passengers who are impacted by service cancellations to complete their journey.

“We encourage any passenger who has been delayed by 15 minutes or more as a result of disruption to claim compensation against the cost of their ticket under the Delay Repay scheme.”

Network Rail has also apologised for the disruption caused by the signalling fault.
