While locals will know Worcester better than anyone else, the city, like many places in the UK, has some secrets.

Hidden gems are popular with locals and visitors and we wanted to know what Worcester’s best-kept secrets are.

So, we turned to Facebook to ask Worcester News readers to reveal the city’s best.

Worcester’s best-kept secrets chosen by locals

One of Worcester’s best-kept secrets is the recipe for the well-known Worcestershire Sauce, according to locals.

One commented: “The recipe of Worcester Sauce” while another said: “Worcestershire sauce secret ingredient”.

Two others replied to this local with one saying: “That’s a good one”. Another local said: “think this is the one !”

Worcestershire sauce was first produced by two chemists from the city, John Wheeley Lea and William Perrins, in 1835.

After believing their initial sauce had been a failure, the pair left it in the cellar for two years, before being rediscovered two years later with a new flavour achieved from leaving the sauce to ferment.

The sauce is still produced by their namesake company, Lea and Perrins to this day.

Worcester’s tunnel network was also a popular answer among locals with one saying: “The location to all the hidden tunnels in worcester.”

Another explained: “There's a maze of tunnels under worcester from cathedral city walls road shrub hill all over the place. Mostly closed off now”.

Some locals said they had explored the tunnels of Worcester with one saying: “Ive been in a few but not explored the whole network”.
