A CAR has crashed through the metal safety railings on a busy school walking route after similar incidents at the same spot over the previous year.

Paramedics were on the scene of a crash after a 4x4 ploughed into the metal railings just off Whittington roundabout.

The vehicle is one of several that has destroyed a fence at the same spot, its purpose to safeguard a public footpath often used by families during the school run.

It is the third incident on the A44 Whittington Road, which meets the A4440 Swinesherd Way, in the past year.

The reoccurring incidents have led worried parents to call for safety measures at the roundabout after they described walking their children to school as 'a nightmare'.

One parent, Heather Wale, previously said: "Kids walk that way to and from school—what is going to be done to ensure they won't be crushed if another car comes off the roundabout?"

"Increasing the flow of traffic on Crookbarrow Way has pushed traffic onto Whittington Road and people trying to pass others in the wrong lane to bypass the traffic."

During the first crash, a BMW ploughed into a lamppost just off the County Hall roundabout on Wednesday, October 11.

The front of the car was crushed and the lamppost bent during the crash on a grass area on Nunnery Way.

Then just two days later on the A4440 Swinesherd Way, a van left the road and flipped onto its side as it smashed through a metal safety barrier, completely crushing the railings.

The 4x4 had crashed in the same spot as the van.
