A SPEED limit on a main road through Worcestershire has been greatly reduced after drivers "used it like a race track".

The A38, between Droitwich and Fernhill Heath, has been reduced from 60mph to 40mph after years of lobbying from residents and councillors.

It is hoped the change will now "safeguard people's lives" as residents reported seeing a large number of crashes on the road.

Councillor Marc Bayliss, Worcestershire County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, has been working to reduce the speed limit since 2021, following his own crusade to make Worcestershire roads safer.

"I work in Hindlip most days and this stretch of road has been a challenge," he said.

"I do not know what it is about it that makes people speed and causes the amount of crashes.

"I hope this (speed reduction) will now safeguard people's lives and vehicles, and we are in the process of calling for other road safety measures like a vehicle activation sign."

According to Cllr Bayliss, the council cannot install VAS signs on roads that follow the national speed limit.

He added: "I am really pleased because I have spent some time championing this.

"I knew about it following complaints from residents, particularly concerns about the A38 junction with Pershore Lane.

"There has been speeding concerns for some time.

"I am delighted to introduce the speed reduction, which will hopefully reduce the number of crashes and other incidents in the area.

"We have had too many at that junction, and people use some parts like a race track."

The new 40mph speed limit was introduced on September 5, after Worcestershire County Council made the order on August 15.
