A MAIN road into the city centre is set to close for a day while roadworks are carried out.

Bath Road, near Norton Road, will close this Sunday (September 8) while highways work on resurfacing it to make way for a new Toucan crossing.

The toucan crossing will be developed near the junction of Norton Road, resulting in delays and multiway traffic lights, which have been in place since July.

Bath Road will be closed this weekend between 8am and 6pm.

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council Highways said: "Bath Road in Worcester will be closed (the section by Norton Road) on Sunday, September 8, between 8am and 6pm for road resurfacing associated with the new Toucan Crossing installation.

"Footway access maintained."

The toucan crossing had been gradually installed over the past ten weeks, with Norton Road being closed throughout the installation.

Worcester city councillor Louis Stephen, who represents Battenhall, said the closures would be "short term pain for long term gain", as he backed plans for the new crossing.

A toucan crossing is one that allows for pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely, and Cllr Stephen marked road safety as a big factor behind its installation.

He said: "It's a great addition to the infrastructure for the city."
