AN AMATEUR runner has completed his first ever ultramarathon in under 14 hours.

32 year old Mack Ashworth, who lives in Whittington, near Worcester, took on the challenge of 100km for the first time on bank holiday Monday, August 26.

The runner, who documented the journey through a vlog for his YouTube channel, used the canal ways to travel from Worcester to Birmingham and back again in 13 and a half hours.

Mr Ashworth said: "Recently I've been inspired by ultramarathon runners such as Jasmin Paris and Kilian Jornet to go beyond the marathon mark.

"I ran from Worcester to Birmingham with my friends back in January, that's 50km, and then I toyed with the idea of adding in the return leg to make it 100km."

Recorded through fitness tracker app Strava, Mr Ashworth's route took him north east on the canal past Droitwich and Bromsgrove.

Mr Ashworth said: "I think I passed 58 locks on the way, and the main highlight of the route was Tardebigge - a flight of 30 locks."

Having completed his first ultramarathon, Mr Ashworth is looking ahead to the Worcester City Runs event on September 14 and 15 before taking on a 100-mile challenge.
