An international animal protection group that rescues bears and other animals from cruelty in Asia has thanked Worcester shoppers after raising more than £600 in a street collection.

The collection, held in the city centre on Saturday (August 31), was hosted by charity Animals Asia.

Christine Coldrick, Worcestershire co-ordinator for the charity, said: "At our collection in Worcester on Saturday we raised £603.55, and I would like to thank everyone who gave us a donation."

"We’re absolutely delighted at the amount we collected and the support we received from the public."

The charity was launched in 1998 with the goal of rescuing moon bears from poor conditions in Asia, where their bile is often extracted to be used in traditional medicine.

It has built a sanctuary for rescued bears in Vietnam, where the government has agreed to stop bear bile farming.

In addition to moon bears, the charity is also involved in the welfare of cats and dogs in south-east Asia, and the protection of animals in zoos and safari parks.
