People across Worcestershire are being asked to spare their clothes in support of children and young people battling cancer.

The plea is for donations of quality fashion and household goods to be given to TK Maxx's Give up Clothes for Good campaign.

The initiative is in support of Cancer Research UK for Children & Young People as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month this September.

The charity's scientific breakthroughs have helped more than double the child cancer survival rate in the UK since the 1970s, with eight in 10 surviving for at least 10 years.

The Midlands houses the UK's only Children’s Cancer Trials Team, where pioneering trials are underway at numerous centres, including Birmingham Children's Hospital.

One research project is investigating the best treatment options for a form of brain tumour known as ependymoma.

Another aims to boost chemotherapy options for children living with acute myeloid leukaemia.

Paula Young, Cancer Research UK spokesperson for Worcestershire, said: "Cancer is different in children and young people.

"It needs different and dedicated research which campaigns like Give Up Clothes for Good help to fund."

She added: "Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we are beating cancer.

"Step by step, day by day.

"More than nine in 10 children and young people with cancer who receive cancer drugs on the NHS receive a drug linked to Cancer Research UK’s work."

Ms Young warned that the battle against cancer has not yet been won, saying: "Despite huge progress, too many young lives are still lost to this devastating disease.

"By donating any quality clothes or goods to their local TK Maxx store, people can help ensure more young people in the region - and across the UK – can live longer, better lives free from the fear of cancer.”

Since 2004, TK Maxx customers and associates have donated over £45 million.

Donations to the Give Up Clothes for Good campaign can be made at any TK Maxx, including stores located on the High Street, Worcester, Sinclair Retail Park, Evesham, and Kingfisher Shopping Centre, Redditch.
