A warning has been issued to Worcester residents to check their electoral registration details at the risk of losing their chance to vote.

This follows a move by Worcester City Council to ensure the information on the electoral register is accurate and up-to-date.

In an effort to maintain the integrity of the city's voting records, the council is writing to all households within its constituency.

The purpose of the letters is twofold: to identify those who are at risk of losing their voice in upcoming elections, and to remind those individuals to register before it is too late.

Next year, Worcester residents are set to vote for their county councillors, a key decision-making body that impacts local governance.

The elections are slated for May 2025.

Shane Flynn, electoral registration officer at the council, said: "Keep an eye out for letters from Worcester City Council.

"This annual canvass is our way of making sure that the information on the electoral register for every address is accurate and up-to-date.

"To make sure you don’t lose your say at next year’s elections, simply follow the instructions sent to you."

He added: "If you’re not currently registered to vote, your name will not appear in the letters we send.

"If you want to register, the easiest way is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote."

Residents who have recently changed their address are particularly urged to check their details.

A study by the Electoral Commission established that recent movers are less likely to be registered than long-term residents.

Jackie Killeen, the Electoral Commission’s director of electoral administration and regulation, said: "It’s really important that everyone who is eligible to vote is able to do so.

"We urge people to look out for the letters from Worcester City Council in this year’s electoral canvass.

“If you are not registered to vote, make sure you provide the necessary information to the City Council when you are asked and – if you have not already done so – register to vote online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.”
