A board games club in Worcestershire is celebrating its second anniversary with an eight-hour gaming marathon.
Wyvern Tabletop Games Club, established in September 2022, invites all interested parties to participate in the event on Saturday, September 28, starting at 1.30pm at the Villages Hall in Bishampton.
Board games have seen an increase in popularity in Worcestershire and nearby regions, with events such as the annual Games Expo in Birmingham, board game cafés like Dice Box in Worcester, and community clubs including Worcester Board Gamers, Pershore Gaming and Herefordshire Board Gamers.
Bob Churchill, one of Wyvern Tabletop Games Club's founding members, said: "It is not really traditional family games like Monopoly or Cluedo driving the growth.
"There's a wealth of new modern board games out there with inventive new mechanics and deeper strategy.
"A few popular titles at Wyvern include Everdell, Scythe, Mosaic, Istanbul, and Cascadia.
"New themes are emerging, too, so while games about conflict or money do remain popular, the big growth in the last few years has been themes connecting to nature and the environment."
Tabletop roleplaying games have also received a significant boost.
Mr Churchill said: "The Netflix show Stranger Things featured Dungeons and Dragons and that drove some new interest.
"But actually it's the alternatives to Dungeons and Dragons that are really catching on right now, with great new games from publishers like Free League, Modiphius and various indie RPG-makers.
"For example, at our games day in September, one of our members will be volunteering as gamesmaster to run Mausritter, which is an RPG in which all the characters are adventurous mice.
"Wyvern meets every month, second Sunday evenings, but this extra bonus games day event is a chance for people to play some of the longer games, like Twilight Imperium, and Eclipse, and you can register for those on our website.
"Or you can just turn up on the day and find any game from our library, short or long, light or heavy.
"We'll be there to help you select a game or find a table with people to join if you're new to it all."
Additional information and registration for the various games can be sought at www.wyvern-tabletop.uk.
