A FRUSTRATED tenant has to use his friend's bathroom every time he needs the loo after a water leak destroyed his bathroom turning his life "upside down".

Carl Allen, of Portland Point, Diglis, has been living with the leak for almost a year which has caused his ceiling to cave in and left him with no electricity.

However, Citizen Housing said because the leak is coming from the flat above, which it does not own, it is causing issues with fixing the problem.

The housing association has even offered to repair the leak in the flat above despite not owning the property.

Mr Allen said: "The problems started in October last year when a leak started coming through my ceiling. 

"I call Citizens Housing every week and they always send out a plumber who tells me that the leak is coming from the flat above and then they leave.

"Nothing is getting sorted."

Despite starting as a small leak, the damage caused to Mr Allen's flat has slowly escalated with his home now in an unliveable state.

Large pools of water have formed in the bathroom and hallway, with water leaking through appliances such as the lighting fixtures and smoke detectors.

"I need to go to my friend's house every time I need to use the bathroom," Mr Allen said: "I've got no electricity, no smoke alarms and my bathroom ceiling has fallen in.

"I went on holiday for a week and gave them my keys so they could sort something out while I was away.

"They never came to do anything and they didn't give me my key back."

Peter Gill, director of housing care and support at Citizen Housing, said: "We are sorry about the issues the customer is experiencing at Portland Point in relation to a water leak coming from the flat above which has affected his ceiling.

"The water leak is from a flat which is not owned by us, which means we need permission from the leaseholder to access the flat and complete the repairs.

"We have offered to complete the repairs to the above flat for the leaseholder despite it not being our responsibility.

"The flat above our customer's home has also recently been sold and the owner has been in contact with us to discuss the issue.

"We are committed to working with our customers and third parties to resolve this issue."
