THESE photos show damage to a 'dangerous' railway bridge after it was hit by a lorry, forcing the closure of a major county road.

The B4084 between Worcester and Pershore is closed near Worcestershire Parkway Railway Station, causing disruption and delays for drivers with the damaged bridge.

Photos show what look like planks of wood used to make part of the structure secure. Although the road is closed, the footpath is still accessible.

Road closures and diversion routes are signposted before the approach to the railway station with drivers using the roundabout near the station to turn around, heading back in the Worcester direction.

The road is considered one of the major arterial routes between Worcester and Pershore. It is understood a vehicle struck the bridge but this has yet to be confirmed officially.

However, photos appear to show planks of wood have been used to secure the bridge and stacks of bricks piled up underneath. The damage is to the Pershore side of the bridge.

No work appeared to be taking place when the photos were taken.

The closure came into force on Monday and is due to last until Sunday, August 18 at the railway overbridge near the station so 'brickwork repairs' can be carried out.

The station is still accessible on the B4084 from the Worcester direction.

A spokesperson for First Buses said on Monday: “Due to the closure of the B4084, all bus stops in between Stoulton, Worcestershire Parkway and Whittington will be omitted, until further notice. This is due to last until Sunday, August 18. We will of course update in due course.

“Due to dangerous brickwork found on the railway bridge. The B4084 is closed.

"The X50 service will be diverting in both directions via A4440, A44 and then Windmill Hill, where it will resume service at Caldewell Lodge.”

As spokesperson for Network Rail said: "The repair work carried out on the bridge was due to a vehicle strike.  The structure was made safe at the time of the incursion, as the safety of the general public is paramount to Network Rail.

"The work is set to be complete within the time period of the road closure, with the re-casing of the missing brickwork and removal of vegetation."
