Worcester News readers have been reacting to news of a petition to lower the speed limit on a "difficult" main road south of Worcester.

This comes after Powick Parish Councillor Sam Underwood started campaigning to change the Upton Road speed limit.

The councillor claims the fluctuating limits from 30 miles per hour to the national speed limit, and back to 30 miles per hour, plus a hidden dip have made the segment of road between Powick and Callow End hazardous for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Cllr Underwood added that while he first thought a 50 mile per hour limit would be appropriate, he believed that a reduction to 30 miles per hour would be the best solution.

Commenting, on Facebook, readers got stuck in to the debate.

Dave Harford said: "You can keep changing speed limits all day long, but until driving standard improve, nothing will change."

Matthew Roberts wrote: "The council have already said it doesn't meet the criteria for a speed reduction.

"So unless this section is plagued by a lot of RTCs then it won't change at all."

Carol Banks, indicating the issue goes beyond the speed limit, said: "I sat outside a cafe on Barbourne Road the other day and in the time it took me to drink my coffee I counted five drivers and a cyclist using their phones whilst moving."

She added: "Cyclist had no hands on his handle bars.

"All of them just asking for problems."

In a similar vein, Gareth Davies wrote: "I have cycled along that stretch of road since the 90s it's not the speed limit it's the distracted drivers."
