Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) has issued safety advice to residents, following an increase in fire-related call-outs.

The fire service has noticed an uptick in fires in the open and bin fires over the last couple of weeks.

To mitigate this, the service has compiled safety tips for this summer.

Residents are advised to avoid outdoor fires.

Should one occur, the advice is to retreat to a safe distance, call 999 immediately and give a precise location if possible.

The danger posed by carelessly discarded cigarette ends has also been highlighted, as they can spark grass fires even if thought to be extinguished.

Disposable barbecues should be avoided too; they pose a fire risk to dry vegetation and can stay red-hot for hours.

For those barbecuing at home, it is recommended to keep a bucket of water nearby, use approved barbecue lighters and avoid throwing live embers in the dustbin.

The role of sunlight shining through glass in igniting fires has also been flagged; residents should be cautious not to leave bottles or glass in woodland or by a sunny window.

Rubbish burning should be done carefully, as garden waste fires can quickly get out of control.

Tents and caravans should be kept at a safe distance from others.

Those seeking a cool down are urged to choose a swimming pool over rivers or lakes due to the potential risk of 'cold water shock'.

Anna Davidson, director of prevention at HWFRS, said: "It is vital we all take particular care not to cause fires or other incidents which could be avoided with a little planning.

"That way, we can avoid putting ourselves, the fire service or other emergency services in unnecessary danger."
