YOUNG people in Worcester were spoiled for choice during an action-packed fun day at a city leisure club with a city councillor trying her hand as a graffiti artist.

The community youth day proved to be an afternoon 'jam-packed with events, games and fun' at Perdiswell Leisure Club in Worcester.

Targeted at youths aged 11-18, one city councillor who backs the event could not resist having a go at creating her own graffiti tag.

The club played host to Onside Advocacy, Action for Children, Platform Housing, Police Cadets, NHS, Sight Concern, Lightbox and Worcester Cricket Foundation during the event on Friday, July 26.

However, more activities are taking place at the centre throughout the summer as councillors backing the event said they hoped it would be the first of many.

Popular outdoor activities included a giant kick-a-ball dartboard, laser gun tunnels, “wipe-out” style jump the pole, a climbing wall and much more.

Indoors were four different workshops, offering drama classes, friendship bracelet making, screen printing and painting.

The skate park was being transformed by tagging from professional graffiti artists assisted by anyone who also wanted to get involved.

Encouraging appropriate tagging helps reduce nuisance tagging in the wrong places and does a fantastic job of brightening up the concrete sides of the skatepark, said Cllr Jill Desayrah.

Cllrs Jill Desayrah and Ed Kimberly enjoyed adding to the design. Cllr Desayrah said: “This was my first piece of graffiti work and I loved it! The whole thing will be spectacular when completed.”

Free refreshments of canned drinks and hot dogs were offered to anyone with a “golden ticket”, 1,000 of which were distributed to local children during the previous week.

The whole thing was described as a 'huge success and repaid the hard work of Phil Weston', manager of the Perdiswell centre.

He said due to the collaboration of The Light Box Team and other agencies, the young people had the opportunities to engage in many positive activities.

He said: "Many thanks to all the funders who made this event extremely successful for the young people of Worcester City."

Cllr Desayrah added: “This afternoon of fun and games is a fantastic thing for all local youths. I hope that many future such events will be possible, especially as they deliberately target the youth audience, a section of the city’s residents who are overlooked far too often.

"Today has been a day for them - well done to everyone involved in preparing and running it. Really great work.”
