More than 1,500 penguins have been created by the community for Worcester’s summer penguin trail.

St Richard’s Hospice, the organisers of the event, shared their gratitude to knitters and stitchers for their contribution.

Called the great Waddle of Worcester, this Wild in Art event encouraged county residents to craft penguins and penguin-themed items for the event.

Sara Matthews, business development manager for St Richard's Hospice said: "When we called upon the county’s keen knitters, stitchers and penguin lovers to get making last year we knew they’d rally around, but the response has blown us away."

She added, "We’ve received more than 1,500 decorative penguins, plus hundreds of donated and handmade penguin-themed gifts, homeware, clothing and accessories.

"All are available in our pop-up penguin shop for a donation towards our care."

One contributor was the group called 'Handmade in Hallow', led by Wendy Brookes.

This group is made up of members aged between 62 and 100 who have been actively participating in the project.

Ms Brookes said: "When we heard that the hospice needed penguins we got cracking straight away."

Ms Matthews also thanked the group and hundreds of others in the community.

She added: "One of our key aims of the Waddle is to help the city create lasting memories this summer and now trail goers can take home these gorgeous lasting mementos too."

Residents can still contribute their handcrafted penguins at the Waddle of Worcester shop located at 14 Chapel Walk, Crowngate Shopping Centre from 10am to 4pm until September 15.

Residents can also post or drop them to Sara Matthews at the Fundraising Department, St Richard's Hospice, Wildwood Drive, Worcester, WR5 2QT.

Ending on September 15, the trail is currently showcasing  80 penguin sculptures in streets and open spaces.

Later, these sculptures along with one special baby penguin will be auctioned to generate funds for St Richard's Hospice.

The great Waddle of Worcester has received support from several partners including Crowngate, DRPG, Worcester City Council and Worcestershire Ambassadors among others.
