It isn’t every day that a comedy legend comes to Worcester.

And we were lucky enough to be treated to not one but three nights at the Swan Theatre by brilliant stand-up comedian Jasper Carrott.

Throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s Jasper was a comedy staple on the BBC with shows such as Carrott’s Lib, Carrott Confidential and Canned Carrott to name but a few, in addition to Carrott’s Commercial Breakdown and The Detectives which also starred Robert Powell.

His observations on real life situations are as hilarious as they are relatable, so it was a real
delight to see him perform live with support from Strictly ABBA.

Strictly ABBA covered some of the well-known ABBA classics like Knowing Me, Knowing You, Mamma Mia, Waterloo and Dancing Queen, and they definitely helped to take us back to the 1970s when ABBA ruled the world.

I found myself involuntarily singing along, even though strictly speaking (no pun intended) I’m more of a heavy metal and rock music fan.

After we were treated to 20 minutes from Strictly ABBA, Jasper took to the stage and he did NOT disappoint, I laughed so much my sides started to hurt!

He did a mix of new material along with his tried and trusted sketches, including a new take on his hysterical Insurance Claims sketch.

Getting old (it is so true, Jasper’s take on it is that you can’t improve as you get older, you can only maintain), the fact that we have hundreds of television channels and streaming services like Netflix, yet we spend hours scrolling through them all to find something to watch (also painfully relatable).

I loved hearing him recall the time he met Princess Diana at a charity dinner in Birmingham – with hilarious results.

I also enjoyed his sketch about the show Celebrity Mastermind, something which according to Jasper fails on both counts – he’s not wrong!

Considering how hot and humid it was in the theatre and considering that in 2017 Jasper had a quadruple heart bypass operation, he did amazingly well.

He took it all in his stride and his opening gag which was related to the heatwave this week was perfect.

If you are a fan of Jasper’s and of stand-up comedy, this is a show not to be missed. It was an absolute treat and well worth braving the heat for.

Jasper Carrott returns to the Swan Theatre tonight (Friday).
