It comes after many eyewitnesses claimed that a car was being driven at speed in the wrong direction on the motorway.

Police have not yet confirmed if this was the case.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a two-car road traffic collision on the southbound M5, between junctions 5 and 6, at 8.48pm last night.

"One ambulance, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car attended the scene.

"On arrival, we discovered three patients.

"A woman was treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

"Two further patients were assessed and discharged at the scene."

A spokesperson for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said police and ambulance crews were on the scene of a multi-vehicle crash.

One eyewitness said: "Around 8.50pm, I was travelling southbound - just before junction 7 - when a black Ford Fiesta was driving very fast down the wrong way of the motorway."

Two other drivers contacted Worcester News to say they had also witnessed the car travelling the wrong way.

A spokesperson for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two crews – one each from Bromsgrove and Worcester Fire Stations – were called at 20.47pm on July 30 to make vehicles safe after an RTC on the M5 Southbound between junctions five and six.

"Both cars were on all four wheels and were made safe.

"There were no casualties, but police, ambulance and Highways all attended.

"The incident was marked as pending closure at 10.07pm."
