Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) are warning residents about the dangers of 'magnified sunlight' fires.
This common occurrence can trigger indoor and outdoor fires, causing unexpected hazards in areas of concentrated sunlight.
As the summer season continues, the fire service is urgently advising people to avoid leaving mirrors and glass items in locations where they could intensify sunlight and induce fire.
Homes have notably been affected by fires originating from magnifying mirrors reflecting sunlight onto combustible items.
The service highlights an incident from two years ago, where the sun's rays passed through a glass bottle in a flower bed and set fire to a hedge; the flames rapidly spread to a building in Malvern.
Already this year, incidents caused by reflected sunlight have been attended to by the fire service.
Emma Roberts, the HWFRS' head of prevention, said: "While enjoying the summer sunshine, it’s vital we all make time to look around our homes and see what ornaments or everyday items could cause a fire as this sort of incident is far more common than people might imagine.
"If you have magnifying mirrors or items such as glass ornaments or paperweights, please keep them out of direct sunlight or where the sun can reflect on to other items.
"Never leave shaving or vanity mirrors on windowsills, and also keep aerosols or any other flammable items out of direct sunlight.
"There is plenty of good advice on our website: hwfire.org.uk."
Some general tips provided by HWFRS include having at least one working smoke alarm on every level of a home and regularly testing them.
Be aware of objects in the home that may be exposed to direct sunlight, such as vanity mirrors or paperweights.
In the unfortunate event of a fire, remember: get out, stay out and call 999.
Additional advice, resources, and a free online Home Fire Safety Check can be accessed via the HWFRS website, and residents can contact the Prevention Team at 0800 032 1155 to determine if they are eligible for a free Home Fire Safety visit.
