THE location of Warndon’s police station remains a mystery to many residents months after its move, a councillor has said.

A lack of a reception area and difficult-to-open doors make access to the station a problem for those that do find it, according to Cllr Jill Desayrah.

She said a “filthy” glass awning adds to the unwelcoming appearance of the new premises.

Police and crime commissioner John Campion said he would follow up on the concerns - and that there were good reasons for the move.

Warndon’s police base moved from a shop front in Cranham Parade to a unit accessed from the car park at the back of the row of shops.

“They moved about a year ago to a premises around the corner from where they used to be,” said Cllr Desayrah at a meeting of Worcester City Council’s Communities committee.

“It used to be a shop front and people could come in. They’ve moved round the corner in a way that people still don’t know they’re there, I would say.

“When you visit them, there is no counter. You have to ring a bell and eventually someone comes out and they have to physically manhandle two sets of doors to get to you.

“Can something be done to make it more welcoming and accessible to the local community than it currently is?

“It’s also - as far as I can see - never been washed, the awning on the top - it’s filthy. Small points in a way but if you want the community to engage and deal with the police in the way you seek, I think that would help.”

Mr Campion said: “Disappointed to hear about the cleanliness of the police base and your observations around access.

“I will have those picked up by the estates team. I’m quite pleased about the move in Cranham Road if I’m honest. In terms of accommodation inside, it was particularly unpleasant in terms of welfare for officers that were based there.

“The prospect of a shop is a good one, I like the shop front bit but the reality for officers wasn’t great.”
