The Founding Dean of Worcester's medical school has been recognised for her considerable contribution to advancing education in healthcare.

The Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) has honoured Professor Sandra Nicholson with their President's Medal.

This accolade is presented to individuals who've made impactful contributions to ASME over several years.

Professor Nicholson chaired the association from 2018 to 2024.

Reflecting on her work within the organisation, Professor Nicholson said: "It makes me proud to receive this award.

"I've worked hard for ASME for the last seven years, but at the same time, I've thoroughly enjoyed it."

The medal comes with a lifetime membership of ASME, and Professor Nicholson intends to continue to engage with the organisation.

She added: "I'm just going to really enjoy taking part in their activities as a member.

"I've been encouraging the members for years to join in with all the activities and conversations we arrange, so that'll be me from now on."

The ASME President, Karen Mattick, was elated to present the 2024 medal to Professor Nicholson.

She said: "I was delighted to be able to award the President's medal 2024 to Professor Sandra Nicholson in recognition of her outstanding contribution to ASME over many years.

"Sandra’s term as Chair of the Board of Directors encompassed many exciting and positive developments for ASME such as the development of new awards, collaborations, and publications to benefit the members, as well as some very challenging ones such as the global pandemic.

"It has been my pleasure to work closely with Sandra, she is a person of great integrity, wisdom and courage."

The University of Worcester, where Professor Nicholson serves, was ranked first in the UK for Quality Education in the Times Higher Education's University Impact Rankings 2024.

They have developed a reputation for pioneering in the medical education field, with the launching of The Three Counties Medical School in September 2023, with the intention to address the pressing demand for more doctors in the area.
