THE council has announced major changes to bin collections in Worcester starting from next week.

Worcester City Council is moving to a "same material, same week" approach starting from Monday, July 29.

It means all residents will have the same coloured bin collected in the same week.

Currently, half of the city's residents have their green bins collected while the other half have their black bins collected in the same week.

The new system will mean that all black bins will be collected in the same week, followed by green bins in the following week.

A Worcester City Council spokesperson said: "Just under 23,000 homes will be affected by the change.

"They will need to put their black bins out for two weeks running – in the weeks of July 22 and 29.

"After that, the normal sequence of green bins one week and black bins the next will resume.

"In the week of July 29, all residents will have their black bins emptied, with their green bins collected the following week."

The city council has contacted residents about the changes and 200 homes will see a change to their collection day.

The move will make the council's bin collection service more efficient.

Councillor Karen Lewing, vice chair of Worcester City Council’s environment committee, said: “The one thing people need to remember is that, in the week of July 29, it’s their black bin that needs to go out.

“We are going to great lengths to make sure that all the residents who will see a change in bin services are fully aware of what is happening.

"The reality is that, once we get through the week of 29 July, bin collections will settle down again into the normal pattern of black bins one week and green the next, so we hope that most people will hardly notice the difference."

Brown bins will not be affected by these changes and the new collection calendar will not be available until Monday, July 29.
