The UK's leading dog charity has shared its top tips for 'pawsitively' perfect holidays for your furry friend.

It’s not just humans who enjoy a summer holiday; over two-thirds of UK dog owners take their furry companions with them, according to a survey by Dogs Trust, which runs a facility in Evesham.

The majority of owners, around 86 per cent, prefer to stay in a rental property or holiday cottage.

Campsites and hotels are also popular choices, chosen by 45 per cent and 22 per cent of owners respectively.

The charity has issued some advice to ensure that our canine companions also enjoy their holiday.

Before any long car journey, help your pet become accustomed to the car on shorter trips.

Packing the essentials, including a lead, harness, collar, tag, food and water bowls, dog toys, poo bags and any required medication is necessary.

It's also a good idea to take along items that will remind dogs of home, such as a familiar blanket.

Dogs often thrive on routine, so try to keep feeding and exercise times similar to those at home.

Include plenty of rest periods in the holiday itinerary and verify that planned venues are dog friendly.

Before setting off, make sure your dog is microchipped and the details are up to date.

This ensures you can be easily reunited if you get separated.

Keeping vaccinations, and flea, tick and worm treatments up to date is also necessary.

Know the location of an emergency vet at your destination.

Weather is another important factor to consider when caring for your pet on holiday.

Keep your dog safe from the sun and avoid the hottest parts of the day for exercise.

Jenna Kiddie, head of canine behaviour at the charity, said: "The UK has so much to offer holidaymakers, from the coastline to the countryside and everything in between, and one of the many benefits of holidaying closer to home is being able to take our four-legged friends with us."
