GETTING artists to paint electrical boxes and signposts has seen a reduction in graffiti, according to Worcester BID.
The BID’s chief executive Samantha McCarthy was speaking at a meeting of Worcester City Council’s Place and Economic Development committee on Monday (July 22).
She said the wayfinding posts in the city were starting to look a bit rusty, “as they do after 15 years”.
“So we painted them up but we contracted local artists - it was all about the community. We wanted them to put their stamp onto things.
“We did the electric boxes and what we’ve noticed is tagging reduced - people respect art. They respect other people’s work.
“Instead of giving them a nice blank canvas that they can go and tag, instead it’s completely dropped and we’ve had such good engagement and feedback that it really became a positive project.”
